H5N5 (and other H5 bird flu strains) can be deadly to both birds and humans, although human cases are rare. The severity in humans can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, it has resulted in death. However, the overall public health risk from these viruses in the United States is currently considered low.

In birds: The virus is often deadly to domestic birds like chickens and turkeys.
In humans: Human infection is rare and typically occurs after close contact with infected birds or other animals.
Severity: Symptoms in humans can range from mild, flu-like symptoms to severe illness requiring hospitalization.
Mortality: Globally, over half of human cases have resulted in death. However, in the U.S., while one human death from H5 bird flu has been reported, most cases have been mild.
